Understanding the settings in the slicer, etc

Does anyone have a good reference book that explains what the different settings are and do and what happens (or at least is supposed to happen) when a change is made to any of the settings? If so please tell me what the title is.

Thanks,

Depends on your slicer. Cura has a great extension called “Settings Guide” by Ghostkeeper. It adds pop-up menus when you mouse over a setting name, and has a more extensive explanation if you r-click the setting. Extensions for Cura can be installed by clicking on the Marketplace button (upper right) and finding the extension you want.

For PrusaSlicer, hit command-F on a Mac to bring up a search function (I guess on a PC, it would be windows-F).

Cheers

Yeah, the settings guide plugin is quite nice for beginners due to the illustrations, but even without, the normal help popup, when the mouse is hovering above an settings option is usually enough.

The best way in Cura is to simply start with the default and only add what you need and know. Afterwards I suggest to look into tutorial videos about slicing and add those options step by step to your configuration.

Most new functions are enabled by default and have well working presets, so tweaking is not required.

In my experience it is also not required to use the per printer settings. Find what works for you and stick to it. Downloading stuff like settings from CHEP is working for all printers, but the result may be minimal better than your own setup. On the other side the settings are blown and overloaded with stuff you never touched and never will touch.

Set your temperatures, Fan spped and the retraction length depending on your printer. That is all I usually use. All other settings are the same for all printers and changed by requirement of the model. This is usually supports, brim and more complex stuff like fuzzy printing or dynamic layer height. The later is a good example of a settings option that simply can be turned on and just works.
