Printing from the SD card does have the advantage that it allows the printer to work standalone, without having to keep a computer running for the whole print. OTOH, printing from a computer allows you to monitor what’s going on more easily and thoroughly.
And also when printers are in separate room than pc
That is why a raspberry pi mounted on your 3D printer is a must You don´t need a computer, it prints alone and you can connect to it via LAN/Wifi and even see a camera image
It also stores all previous prints and you can use the webinterface to search (by typing a keyword), sort files in folders and start the print without even entering the printers room
I never printed from SD card. It is just a pain to fiddle around with those cards. Mount and unmount them, getting them into the tiny slots in the right orientation. Letting them fall onto the ground where they in 90% of all cases bounce under a cabinet.
The first thing I did to all my printers was replacing the power supply by an ATX one. The second thing was adding a raspberry pi to it.
I’m still debating about a Pi. I think upgrading the control board, getting a direct drive like an OmniaDrop, adding a 2nd Z axis, and enclosing the printer might come before that. I’m currently printing from a computer, and I can continue that for now.
That’s why i use REPRAP fw. It allows me to controll from my pc via WiFi. Also i can combine with RasPi or even with a second controller interface. Mechanical modofications are very easy to do!
The REPRAP FW is interesting for sure, but I would have to upgrade to a 32-bit control board 1st.
Duet WiFi is the first choice
Mr Ender 5r wins a Kewpie doll. I do not see a bin file on my sd card.
It is just a leftover. AFAIR printers like the ender series take the latest file with a .bin to flash as firmware. Other boards like the SKR boards take the “firmware.bin” file, perform a flash and rename it as “firmware.cur”. The file stays there so you have a backup, in the case your next firmware flash wents wrong.
I guess your backup is gone.
I didn’t understand anything of what you wrote. Can you commun icate with people that are old and stupid? I love your stuff you are just very advanced for mr.
My backup is gone. Should I call the police or what should I do?
Your printer has flash memory on board. Thats basically an USB Stick / SD Card which you cannot see or remove. That is the hard drive of your printer . It is kind of like the OS on your phone.
Well, to update your printer all you need is to write a file named firmware.bin onto your SD card. This must be a specific compiled firmware for your specific printer or you end up with a brick of useless hardware. You get it from your manufacturer or trust able sites. Or you compile it yourself, but thats a little more complicated.
The printer will find that file on power up and write this file into your printer internal flash memory. In the result your printer is running the latest firmware with all its fixed bugs and new features.
Depending on the type of printer you have the behaviour afterwards is different. Your ender just ignores the old file until a new file with a different name shows up. Other printers just take a file named “firmware.bin” and rename them to “firmware.cur” or they require tools to update.
Lets say next month there is a firmware that has a feature you want. You download it, copy it to your SD card, start the printer and the firmware gets flashed. But something goes wrong. Your printer is no longer working. Instead of trying to find a working file on the internet you could have used the old .bin file (the one you lost) to repair the system on your own.
So basically no harm is done, when the file is gone. Just remember, when you successfully update your printer in the future: make a backup of that .bin file, so you can always go back to that specific version. Best way is to rename it from “.BIN” into “.CUR”. Indicating it is the current version used by your printer.
Just remember: SD cards itself are not a proper backup. You can easily destroy their contents when pulling them from a printer or computer or there is a glitch in transfer. Get some USB Stick and store all important files required for your printer. incl. the CURA archives you download. That way you can always go back if something goes wrong.
I hope this was a little easier to understand.
I wish Ender firmware could be updated from the SD card. Unfortunately, unless you have an Ender 3 v2, you have to flash the firmware from a computer over a USB connection.
@roon4660 as far as your backup is concerned, I would worry about it. If you need to reflash the firmware you can just download the latest release.
Pricey though.
I can’t believe that you experts will even talk to me. I thank you all so much.
Well, every one gets old over time. I am officially old in November, when turning 50.
Technology is advancing so fast that at some point every one gets under the train because his brain is no longer willing to cooperate. I guess that´s the wheel of life.
No one is stupid!!! We must find a way to attach this basic knowlege to you! Some of us is dislexic or has Autism phasma or has Asperger. Nobody is perfect but everybody is intelligent enough to bring knowlege in his size! So please don’t ever call your self stupid again! It’s like i’m talking to my father #roon4660. ( what is your name ?)
Here is very good source of knowlege about building 3d printers. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088Q1FLP6/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=gs2&linkId=0c2b0bb2f9db9f5cabc3776bf74efd9c&creativeASIN=B088Q1FLP6&tag=fabbaloo-21&creative=9325
My name is Larry and I really do have brain dammage, which isn’t really being stupid. I can still speak three languages fluently which is more than most anglo americans can say. I only spoke English til I was 21 years old.
Hi Larry! Nice to meet you! I’ve allready sent you a pm. Nice to hear you speak 3 languages ( i speak 6 ) while being dislexic, autistic phasma and Asperger and all controllable. So nobody is perfect!
