I purchased an Artist D Pro Auto Leveling last spring (can’t find any version info).
I didn’t get much time last spring to fully align the two extruders. However, when I returned to the printer recently, I noticed that there is no consistency for extruder1 Z offset.
I level the bed, then go into baby steps and set the offset with a piece of paper. When I go to print, the nozzle can be into the bed, or way high. Going back into baby steps, the z offset value hasn’t changed, but I might have to lower the nozzle again to get the gauged offset. I can repeat this over and over. It is like the z offset is being randomly set at print time.
The only way I have been able to get an acceptable 1st layer is to be in baby steps when the print starts, and manually adjust the Z offset until I get an adequate 1st layer adhering to the bed.
Just off hand it sounds like your Z axis has some play in it. Does the printer use Z axis screws?
You might double check that the screws holding the extruder to its carriage are tight, and also see if there’s any play in the way the extruder rides on the X axis. Does it use rollers or linear rails? Try wiggling the whole extruder and hot end assembly around to see how much play there is. If it uses rollers, you can reduce any play by adjusting their eccentric nuts. If it uses linear rails, make sure the rail’s screws are tight.
So, I am using the Cura slicer. I found that you have to add a G29 to the startup Gcode if you want to have auto leveling. When I added this, I started getting a consistent Z offset.
