Strange Ender 3 V2 Issue

I can’t argue with your arithmetic. All I can say is my Ender 5 menu does say steps/mm.

In the end though, what really matters is that the Z axis moves the correct distance to print models properly. Here’s what I mean. When I 1st received my Ender 5 Pro on May 28, 2020, I was , of course, anxious to see it working. I mean, who isn’t? However, when I tried to print 1 of the pre-sliced models that came on the SD card, it came out squished. It was only half as tall as it should have been. I was puzzled. I tried another model & got the same results. WTH?? After much searching the interwebs for several hours I found the answer: some other people figured out that Creality had changed the Z lead screw to 1 that moves only half the distance per revolution compared to the 1 they originally employed. Unfortunately, they failed to update the firmware shipping with the Ender 5 printers. I changed the Z axis steps/mm setting from 400 to 800 & all models started printing at the correct height.

So, in the end, no matter what you call the setting, it needs to have a value that gives correct model height.

I agree with everything you said. I think there is obviously a difference in the firmware and the display options between our two machines. My calibration prints come out fine so whatever that 400 represents it must be OK.

I did order a coupler and when that doesn’t help I’ll install an ABL and be done with it.

I can already think of a couple of questions I have related to ABL install - what is best - keep this thread going or start a new one?

I would start new thread(s), 1 per topic.

Here’s what I’m using now:

Creality PEI sheet: https://www.amazon.com/Creality-Removable-3D-Magnetic-Flexible/dp/B07XXWXLJ1/ref=sr_1_4?crid=29MG54SSRWBZO&dchild=1&keywords=creality+pei+magnetic+flexible+heated+bed&qid=1618325167&sprefix=Creality+pei%2Caps%2C175&sr=8-4

Magigoo: https://magigoo.com/products/magigoo/

I am finding this combination works really well. I have tried a bunch of bed types. This has been the best, at least for PLA & PETG. There are several aspects of this combo I really like:
• the Magigoo releases the models easily after they cool down (and they cool quickly because the bed plate is metal)
  • I find the Magigoo helps stop warping or lifting of the model off the bed during printing, especially at the corners
  • it's really nice to use a bed that doesn't need clips to hold it down
  • the metal bed lifts off & on very easily
I am currently using a BL Touch but, if I had been using the metal bed before I got the BL Touch, I would have ordered an EZ-ABL. I may still do so.
  • Thanks for info. Will post results of coupler install here but move to new thread for ABL install.

I installed the coupler and it did not eliminate the thunk noise on initial z axis moves. I installed the BLTouch and new firmware, seems to be working fine so far.

    No more thunk?

Alas, the thunk remains. But the auto bed levelling seems to take care of the z movement when the thunk happens so I will have to settle for that.

I hope your BL Touch continues to work for you. But if experience and helping othrs with theirs is any indication then sadly that will not be the case. ?
