Should MakeWithTech build a Thingiverse Alternative?

Sorry, incorrect post, please delete!

A clarification about charging for models.makewithtech.com. First an update.

The site now has over 1,200 models in the local directory and access to all of the Thingiverse OpenSCAD models. It has over 5,000 free subscribers. Beyond supporting the customization of models based on templates – templates are just OpenSCAD scripts – it also includes a number of extensions beyond what was available on Thingiverse or even in the OpenSCAD desktop application. For example:

  1. Edit your templates (OpenSCAD scripts) online via a web based OpenSCAD IDE.

  2. Add modules, fonts, and files to your model by including them in a ZIP container and uploading to the site along with your OpenSCAD file.

  3. Prompt the end user (the model maker) for a file and use it with the OpenSCAD script.

  4. Test you models with both the official release and a experimental release. The experimental releases are update every 4-6 weeks and available to premium subscribers.

  5. Keep track of favorite.

  6. Customize your creator page where model templates you upload are displayed.

  7. Receive tips via a partnership with Buy Me a Coffee for your templates.

The ability to search for a template locally and on Thingiverse and then customize it using the official OpenSCAD release will always be free.

A premium subscription provides you with access to advanced features such as the online editor, favorites, additional storage and more.

As importantly, premium subscriptions help to support the overall MakeWithTech learning environment. They help pay for this forum, for the production of YouTube videos. for the models.makewithtech.com app and future services for the maker community.

All the best.
