This is a testing method I employed a lot; it's intended to give the developer insight into the user's pov as well as record defects and suggestions. Scenario: I am a first time user, just checking the site out to determine if it provides value to me or not Persona: I have printing experience but not much CAD (just worked along with some youtubes) Executive Summary: Suggestion: provide the Thing ID link just under the picture on the left of the SCAD page. Suggestion: next/last page buttons would be handier under the Things list. Suggestion: bold the selected item when either Thing ID or Get Files is pressed Suggestion: clear the File Name list when a new item is selected. Suggestion: express 2:5 as "Between 2 and 5, inclusive" (or exclusive, I'm just guessing) Suggestion: You are a video expert: include a walkthrough of using a simple, medium, and advanced model. Findings: The persona "I have printing experience but not much CAD (just worked along with some youtubes)" needs additional guidance to keep from being discouraged by random interactions with 'things' that vary widely in complexity and quality. While presentation is attractive and usable, the persona encounters some unfamiliar and complex concepts and can easily become discouraged or confused. Usability is emphasized and seems to be well provided, but I don't have the experience necessary to determine to what degree. Not tested: High utilization, long queues, cancelling jobs. Walkthrough: Searched for 'Engine' Found 'Difference Engine v2.0' Clicked on Get Files Examined STLs, found it interesting, loaded SCAD (I like the display much more!) Unfortunately, the first parameter is '$fn' and defaults to 50. Second item is tab_offset, and I have no context. I have no idea what to do with this, so I give up on this item. I navigate back, which works perfectly. Good work! I find my model in the first column (it would be very nice if the selection was highlighted, I had to seach for it. If it wasn't mentioned in the second column I might have encountered another 'give-p point'.) Clicked on the Thing ID Here I find key information I need to use the customizer. (Even it lacks an explanation of $fn.) Fortunately, my models-poc page is still open, but I have to navigate back to the SCAD page. Suggestion: provide the Thing ID link just under the picture on the left of the SCAD page. Reading the Thingiverse page made me less interested, so I will move on. Suggestion: next/last page buttons would be handier under the Things list. Oooh, I just saw 'Electronic project box'. If that's not of interest to me, nothing will be. This time I click on the Thing ID link first, having learned my lesson. The Thingiverse page isn't too informative, but I will take a look. I switch back to models-poc Again, I have to search for what I was looking at. If I had been interrupted, this would be difficult. Suggestion: bold the selected item when either Thing ID or Get Files is pressed I till have the files list from the last item displayed, and it's distracting and a bit cluttered looking Suggestion: clear the File Name list when a new item is selected. I have three SCAD files here. Box, screw-holes and fb. I will look at fb first, because I don't know what it might be. Oh, this is horrible. There are no parameters, and the picture represents the whole project. I cannot tell what this file is. Maybe I don't need it? I will try box.scad. This is better. The options seem to make sense. There are a lot of them, but they're readable. (Aside: I see one option expressed as 2:5. Is this an SCADism for a range of 2 to 5? Suggestion: if so, express as "Between 2 and 5, inclusive" (or exclusive, I'm just guessing) It has width_in (35) and length_in (60). These are crazy, I'm guessing they're actually mm. I changed a parameter from false to 'tru' to see what happens. I queued it for processing. It said nothing about my misspelled 'true'. I see I cannot queue another of the same item while printing. That avoids a lot of possible bugs. :) In the viewer, I can see the text I specified wasn't rendered. Probably because of my 'tru' blunder which had something to do with text. Yike! it is bad news!!! ECHO: "*** Models at MakeWithTech: ignore duplicate variable definitions ***" So I don't even know if it's possible to print this one with your system. It was a random choice of a simple project. At this point I feel that I don't know what I'm doing, and I don't know enough about SCAD to figure this out. Suggestion: You are a video expert: include a walkthrough of using a simple, medium, and advanced model. Provide some hints to identify a simple model before you get in over your head. Provide a small curated selection of starter pieces: very handy, simple, no mistakes in naming or units. Having never used the customizer in Thingiverse, I found the experience a little like being thrown in a lake to learn how to swim. I don't think the my persona (I have printing experience but not much CAD (just worked along with some youtubes)) is you key customer at this point. Other comments: I see the utility in this, and would like to develop this skill, but don't see how to. I believe just a little guidance could mitigate my discomfort. I would guess this looks great to a disgruntled x-thingiverse cutomizer customer, but I never knew it was a feature. I figured some people shared scad files as well as stl's because it made sense for the part. My wandering around looking for things at random led to bad results. (There are ratings on Thingiverse, should you leverage them?)
