Folks,

When I started this community, I selected vBulletin because it was inexpensive and met our needs. However, as this community matured and grew, it became clear that the vBulletin software used for this forum could be better. Now it’s time to migrate to a more current and fully featured product.

Over the next couple of months, I will migrate [forum.makewithtech.com](http://forum.makewithtech.com) to Discourse. You can try out a Discourse forum at [https://try.discourse.org/](https://try.discourse.org/).

With Discourse, we gain access to unified logins with [models.makewithtech.com](http://models.makewithtech.com), community moderation, an excellent mobile app, polls, improved image handling, and better member communications.

All posts and user accounts are scheduled to move; however, the first time you log into the improved forum, you will see a prompt to enter a new password.

Don’t expect any changes for a while, as the migration will take some time. In addition, I will keep the existing VBulletin site in place to ensure we retain all valuable content.

Don’t worry; the new forum will remain free. It will just be easier to use and much prettier.

I am interested in all thoughts about this move, so reply here or email me directly at [makewithtech@cogitations.com](mailto:makewithtech@cogitations.com).

Irv

Maybe I should reserve my comments until after it set up but I personally think Discord for more like a chat room than a forum. Now having said that maybe it’s the way the ones I have visited were setup.

Okay maybe I have miss spoke, I reread the post and followed the link Irv included, it was Discourse not Discord. It would be a shame to loose all the content here to bad there isn’t a way to migrate it over to the new platform.

Sounds like a plan! Witnessed several forum moves in my life without noticing and the need for a sofa and popcorn. I bet it will go well, but fingers crossed!

@Gramps The plan is to move 100 percent of the current content. All of the current posts.

Moving from here to Discourse is like moving to a new house. Many things are different but with a little time it will feel like home to you. I have been exploring are there some and though it is different at 1ft I think we will all become comfortable there. Irv did a great job finding us a new home that also fits his needs as the administrator.

Not sure where to post this, i was looking at the post, ‘Odd lines in prints’ and the images do not show up. Not sure this is a migration issue.

I just read the same post and the photo was there. Try looking at it again and see if you have the same issue. If you do clear the cache in your browser and try again. In most browsers you can hold down the Shift key and reload the page

It is always possible some images did not get moved, but at @Gramps indicated it might also be a browser cache issue.

Sorry, maybe I should have mentioned that I was on the android app, not using a browser.

This morning I signed in using a browser and the image was not there. I have never been to that page on this machine so it is doesn’t seem like a cache issue.

The entry on the page looks like:

![IMG_3707.jpg](https://yyz1.discourse-cdn.com/flex035/images/transparent.png)

on some threads the image is shown, on some threads the images are not shown. for example in the thread:

# [Printer make globs of PLA on the nozzle](https://forum.makewithtech.com/t/printer-make-globs-of-pla-on-the-nozzle/6870)

shows this instead of the image

Personally, it makes things more difficult for me to visit. I prefer to use a browser called “Pale Moon”. It is a sub-set of Firefox with a lot more security and I cannot use it to log in. Therefore, when I do my thing, I now have to use Firefox. Won’t see me as much.

I will investigate further with the Discourse team on Monday, but the missing images may have resulted from a decision I made to move the last 4 weeks of posts “quickly” vs. having the forum offline for days, if not a week or more.

For the next month or so, you can find the original posts at [old-forum.makewithtech.com](http://old-forum.makewithtech.com).

This is not a solution, but at least a band-aid if my decision messed up some of your migrated posts.

Sorry to hear that. Is the issue with the new software that it requires cookies that “Pale Moon” blocks? I am happy to investigate with the Discourse team.

@Nefarious This is quite interesting. At first, I thought this issue was happening to new posts on the old forum over the past 4 weeks, from when we first started the migration until the final cutover.

But after looking around at posts and dates, I do not think that is the issue.

It just seems some images had trouble in the migration. Hopefully, this impacts a limited number of posts.

I am not sure what the problem could be. Here is the message I get and does not allow a log in.

I installed the MacOS beta version and got the same message. Even tried changing the compatibility mode which defaulted to Firefox and still got the message. Looks like a really nice browser with a lot of security features. It’s a shame that Discourse won’t allow it. If I was new here and got that message I would move on as it appears that it only supports the top mainline browsers. The list is rather small and limiting.

I hear your concern. This is a tough one.

The issue of security cuts both ways. Attempting to support many low-volume browsers when the “major” browsers control 99% of the market is quite expensive and risk-prone for software manufacturers.

It may make their site/software be less secure if a manufacturer cannot thoroughly test a browser used by a few users. When the manufacturer allows a user with an “untested” browser to access the system, they may risk the security of other users. One reason is that that “untested” browser could be a bot, not a browser probing for security openings.

That said, it is each individual’s right to use whatever software they are comfortable with. Each technology choice we make has tradeoffs.

Years ago, when I was doing a lot of security consulting, I would tell my customers, “the only completely secure system has no users”.

There I understand your dilemma. I hear you, but honestly do not have a solution.

I can remember when I had the same issue when using Firefox back when MS Explorer was the king of the hill. It’s got to be really hard for a small startup to get market share when a bunch of sites won’t allow them to use the site. That being said I do understand the security aspect too.

I use Sarfi and everyone in a while I run into a site that doesn’t work when using it. Not being blocked just the features just don’t work and I have to switch to Firefox to use the site.
